Race vs Standard

31/12/2014

A quick comparison of the two frames as been asked a few times.

Both frames are titanium with carbon spars.

Race frame:

Higher grade glass bead blasted titanium giving a mat finish.

Allowing Narrower profile tubes to be used while remaining strong. This enables a lighter frame to be produced.

My ultimate race edition is just under 18.5kg complete with 130cm prop, race harness and titanium exhaust. With a light weight reserve chute mounted it is still under 20kg.

Other differences not so obvious are..

The frame breaks down in the same way but the final piece is slightly larger. Due to the built in leant back angle and the heel protection beam. It is more stable on the ground but slightly deeper by a couple of cm. ( I will measure it one day )

The seat position is higher on the taller frame, you can see this on inflight photos and ground standing photos. The race harness in the race frame is clear of the ground while standing. Great for muddy fields, something to be aware of when foot dragging. You could call this a crumple zone if you were that way inclined

The standard titanium frame:

Polished titanium of larger diameter tubing. ( bigger tubes, not larger hoop ) all frames are 140cm

Available in a wider choice of hang point options. Over the shoulder carabiners with under arm J bars.

The standard frame feels a little more structural in the hoop area, not in squash but pulling back and forth, tripping / falling. The race frame is lighter and has a bit of whip to it. Both handle power launching, they are structurally strong in that department. I power launch a 140cm race frame with a 130cm prop with no issues so far. I generally recommend a 125cm prop for more clearance.

Competent pilots looking for the lightest machine possible I recommend the race edition. Weekend warriors and newer pilots I recommend the standard frame.

There are subtle differences in flight position and balance.

The hybrid engine fits the taller race frame better as the engine is mounted taller with the offset gearbox.

Since 2018 we now have Race v2

The Race v2 keeps with the race frame format. The pilot has been raised a few cm to improve weight shift and pitch control. A double heel protection bars. Engine mounts options only for Nitro and Tornado. Those engine mounts cross bars are now shaped for the pilot, putting him closer to the engine, improving flight dynamics.
